(From Israel’s Declaration of Independence) Aims of the Program: · To strengthen the Israeli-Democratic identity of the pupils · To foster their acquaintance with Israeli society in the spirit of Israel's Declaration of Independence. · To create a context for pupils of the Democratic School, Kiryat Ono, and pupils of St. Joseph School, Nazareth to get to know one another on a personal, social and national level, and to get to know 'the Other'. Background: During the previous school year, 7th, 8th and 9th graders from both schools met one another through the "Games for Peace" startup project, which fosters communication and personal relations between Jews and Arabs in Israel. Our pupils were chosen to participate in a pilot project, via the Minecraft computer game, a virtual version of Lego. The aim of the game is to create a new world by collaborating with characters / people from other places. The pupils first met in Nazareth at the St. Joseph School, and interacted throughout the school year on a weekly basis via Minecraft. At the end of the year, we hosted the St. Joseph pupils in Kiryat Ono. It was a very exciting and very successful event; barriers quickly fell, and the first signs of genuine friendships began to appear, not just among the pupils of both schools, but among the teachers too. We believe it is important to continue the momentum by having pupils from both schools meeting and deepen their friendships in the 2014-2015 school year. We want to strengthen the bond between the two schools, and to create an educational model that promotes a shared future of trust and peace between Arabs and Jews in Israel.
